Professional practice

2 points + One 1.5-hour lecture per week + Full-year subject + Caulfield + Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of second year in graphic design studies

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will be able to understand the nature of working either as an employee or freelancer, within different areas of the profession and appreciate the advantages and/or disadvantages of each; have an understanding of appropriate business procedures; be challenged to maintain an enquiring mind about the practice of design through exposure to people involved in the study of design and culture.

Synopsis A study of the structure of the design profession including advertising agencies, design studio, freelance practice, photography and illustration. A consideration of the problems of art direction, and the ethical issues that confront the designer. A short study of business methods applicable to designers, outlining the use of accountants and lawyers. Students are also given an outline of how to gain employment including interview techniques and resume writing.
