Objectives On successful completion of this subject the student will be able to demonstrate a developed critical and practical understanding of photography; to apply this to a range of technical processes such as the use of medium and large format cameras, tungsten and electronic studio lighting and equipment, and a wide range of photographic image-producing materials; develop an understanding of photography as part of graphic design, and the relationship between word and image in a range of design-based applications.
Synopsis Through a series of location and studio-based projects and workshops, students will be introduced to medium and large format cameras and the various photographic emulsions available for these, tungsten and electronic flash studio lighting, and the processes of art direction for various media. Students will also be introduced to various photographic-based image making processes, and will use these in their project work. Through tutorial discussion students will further develop a critical understanding of the work of fine art and applied photographers, and develop a basic understanding of the use of word and image in relation to design, and demonstrate this understanding in their project work.
Assessment Six major projects: 85% + Diary/journal: 15%
