Communication studies

4 points + one 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial per week + Full-year subject + Caulfield

Objectives Semester one On successful completion of this subject the student will be able to prepare and deliver informative oral presentations; demonstrate interview skills capable of acquiring a good brief from a client; apply effective self presentation in a job interview; become a more comprehensive, empathetic, and critical listener; understand psychological factors involved in advertising, rewards and perceptions that are of use to the designer; use acquired knowledge of consumer behaviour to help select target audiences, talk the language of consumers and determine what motivates them. Semester two Effectively understand, personally and professionally, the role of stress in daily life and develop strategies for dealing with it; understand the symbolic nature of verbal and non-verbal communication and explore its application in interpersonal and group communication; grasp basic writing skills and understand the power of words and their creative use in copy-writing; analyse how words and visuals can complement and contrast with one another; understand the nature of creative problem solving and appropriateness of logical and lateral thinking.

Synopsis Students examine the range of communication processes and models: verbal and non-verbal communication; listening and reading skills; oral communication, interviewing techniques, language structure, grammar, augmentation; writing style; interpersonal communication and group communication. An introduction to copy writing and the psychology of advertising persuasion is linked to project work in GDN1150 (Graphic design practice).

Assessment Assigned projects: 65% + Written test: 35%
