Objectives On successful completion of this subject the student will be able to demonstrate a basic critical and practical understanding of photography; apply this critical and practical thinking to the use of the medium; achieve a practical understanding of the 35mm camera; demonstrate range of technical skills in the use of light sensitive materials, including colour transparency and colour and black and white negative films, and black and white printing papers; and develop a basic critical understanding of applied photography, especially as related to design.
Synopsis Through a series of projects students will be introduced to the workings of the 35mm camera, and will develop a basic technical understanding of a range of materials used in colour and black and white photography. The projects will involve the student in the creative processes of designing, composing and finishing photographs to illustrate thematic exercises. By lecture and tutorial discussion the students will develop an understanding of the work of important contemporary and historical photographers in the fine art and applied fields, and will examine and discuss the relationship of this work to their own photography.
Assessment Five major projects: 85% + Diary/journal: 15%
