Graphic design theory

8 points + One studio hour and one 1-hour lecture per week + Full-year subject + Caulfield

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will be able to apply the space manipulation principles of scale, dynamics, and stability; utilise the visual techniques of photography, illustration, typography, and three dimensional images within a given format; use grid systems as a design structure; understand and apply basic colour theory; utilise the basic elements of design texture, pattern, shape, form, colour, and type; demonstrate a basic understanding of package design; consolidate design knowledge in the form of symbols and logotypes; understand both the design and creative process.

Synopsis Students are introduced to basic design theory through a series of lectures and projects aimed at establishing a comprehensive understanding of two dimensional and three dimensional design. This is a core subject and successful completion of this subject is required to proceed to second-year studies.
