Business planning

9 points + 5 studio hours and one 1-hour lecture per week + First/Second semester + Caulfield

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will be able, in parallel with the product development work in DES4000, to assess and analyse the quality characteristics of competitive products; determine the requirements of consumers and the commercial market; and plan and execute a business strategy with respect to market research, product lifecycle, pricing level, distribution and other marketing considerations.

Synopsis This subject aims to develop entrepreneurial strategies and capabilities which facilitate the product development process and provide the necessary skills for students to realise design solutions in a commercial environment subject to acceptable environmental and other quality criteria. Topics include sourcing technical and financial support, formulating comprehensive design and development briefs, patents, market research studies, new business incentives, financial planning and preparation of presentations to business interests.

Assessment Product feasibility study and business plan (paper, 8000 words minimum)
