Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will have acquired knowledge and skills in relation to the properties and use of different materials commonly used in design; low-technology methods of manufacturing products having in mind design for recycling and disassembly; and basic applied mechanics theory for a range of design materials in product design applications.
Synopsis Topics include the properties of timber, timber supplies, machining processes, joinery methods and production of stock forms. Characteristics of sheet metal, conversion into standard product forms, and machines and processes required for limited production runs. Study of finishes and laminates commonly used for the above materials, durability and other properties relevant to design. Low volume paper and paperboard manufacture for industrial design including types available and typical uses.
