Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will be able, through concepts and practice, to orient themselves into social life and its three main functions as a context for their craft.
Synopsis In this unit we explore ways in which the arts, crafts and design function in the ecological/economic and socio-political domains of society. In the economic domain we study the history and recent developments of ways in which craft is produced, distributed and `consumed'. For the political domain, craft is considered as an institution. Topics include professional organisations; government support structures at local and national levels, their standards and impact; communications, magazines, books, journals, exhibitions, conferences, media, conferences.
