Synopsis

The group work aspects of the unit examine the historical aspects of the development of group work including group leadership styles, establishment and termination of groups. The family work aspects consider family work from a variety of theoretical frameworks and make links for the delivery of family work in direct practice in organizational context. Throughout the unit there will be exploration of the ways the various concepts may apply in child welfare or aged care.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Explain the development of family work and group work from a human service perspective and, in particular, the implications of this for work in child welfare or aged care fields;
Understand the diversity present in the definition and understanding of families and groups;
Identify key theories and practice guidelines for working with families and groups;
Critically analyze the strengths and limitations of theoretical approaches for working with families and groups, with particular emphasis on the fields of child welfare and aged care;
Explain a conceptual framework for understanding the key processes involved in family work and group work including beginning, ending and enhancing communication during the helping process; and
Critically review the impact of 'self' on helping processes in family work and groupwork.
