Synopsis

Respiratory emergencies are considerable burden within Paramedicine and the community generally, consuming large amounts of health resources. This unit teaches Intensive Care Paramedics about the paramedical diagnosis, approaches and care of patients suffering from respiratory illness. Upon completion of this unit students will have an appropriate understanding of the assessment and emergency management of patients with respiratory conditions.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe and explain the structure and function of the respiratory system through the application of their knowledge of normal respiratory system anatomy and physiology;
describe the natural history of respiratory disease and pathology related to acute and chronic respiratory conditions;
explore and apply the pharmacology of relevant drugs used in the emergency management of respiratory conditions;
integrate the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to the management of respiratory conditions in 'real time' work simulation using a clinical problem solving and clinical decision making model;
describe and explain the benefits of pre-hospital intensive care and the related role of the Intensive Care Paramedic;
discuss the epidemiology of acute and chronic respiratory disease;
demonstrate the characteristics of an interactional professional within the context of managing patients with acute and chronic respiratory disease;
implement evidence-based practice to the management of respiratory conditions.

Off-campus attendance requirements

Students will be expected to complete at least 6 hours of internet learning or and a minimum of 6 hours of private study and self-directed learning per week. If completed on-campus sessions, students will be expected to attend the equivalent of 6 hours of lectures, seminars and tutorials per week and complete a minimum of 6 hours of self-directed learning.
