Synopsis

The emergency nurse requires a diverse knowledge and skill base to appropriately and effectively assess and manage patients in the emergency department. This advanced emergency nursing unit will enable the student to develop proficiency in the emergency management of abdominal, neurological and obstetric emergencies, trauma and burns. The unit will prepare the student to provide an advanced level of care to emergency patients across age groups, and from all socio/ cultural and economic groups.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the disease process behind a medical crisis and explain the rationale for the nursing care provided
Discuss and demonstrate planning and management of the trauma patient based on primary and secondary survey assessment for a range of traumatic injuries
Demonstrate and evaluate independent triage practice based on the Australasian Triage Scale
Identify and evaluate appropriate age specific, socio-culturally relevant, nursing interventions for patients in the above groups
Identify and discuss the application of interpersonal skills in the management of patients, families and significant others who are experiencing grief, loss or what they perceive to be a crisis
Critically evaluate and apply nursing research to selected emergency patient care
Critically evaluate the socio-cultural, legal and ethical issues related to the nursing management of the critically ill client/patient.

Fieldwork

Students must be working in an emergency department a minimum of 3 days/week.

Students must achieve a pass in the final examination, Clinical performance appraisal and Clinical hurdles to achieve a pass in the unit.
