Synopsis

This unit will cover the impacts and human cost of occupational disease and injury, occupational health and safety law, frameworks for primary prevention, workers' compensation systems, occupational rehabilitation, case studies highlighting historical achievements and challenges, international and national occupational health and safety (OHS) organizations.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Discuss and analyse the human cost and causes of workplace injury, disease and death
  2. Identify contemporary occupational health and safety (OHS) data sources and explain their merits and limitations
  3. Describe and evaluate various injury and disease prevention models
  4. Describe the legal framework for OHS and occupational injury management
  5. Describe and discuss the application of occupational rehabilitation programs and OHS service management
  6. Identify contemporary OHS achievements and emerging challenges and contextualise their impact within OHS management systems.

Responses to 6 weekly forum discussion topics (45%)
Quiz (Multiple choice) (30 minutes) (10%)
Written assignment (3,000 words) (45%)

Workload requirements

Off-campus: 20 hours per week for 6 weeks.
