Synopsis

Psychosocial effects of work on individuals is explained from a preventive viewpoint. Mental illness & its effect on employment, alcohol and drug use, disability discrimination, equal employment opportunity legislation, workplace health promotion & shift work are examined.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify and evaluate varied situations where workers find it hard to cope;
identify and analyse the causes of absenteeism and develop and implement appropriate management control strategies;
communicate the underpinning principles of disability discrimination and equal employment legislation and practically apply them in workplace settings;
develop, implement, and evaluate a health promotion program;
implement evidence-based occupational drug and alcohol management;
analyse the health effects of shift work and implement appropriate rosters and other strategies to minimise hazardous factors;
reflect critically on theoretical models and concepts underpinning organisational psychology; and
develop insightful and persuasive recommendations to improve workplace culture.
