Synopsis

The effects and human cost of occupational disease and injury, occupational health and safety law, worker's compensation, negligence, occupational rehabilitation, historical achievements and challenges, international and national organisations.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. discuss and analyse the human and economic cost and causes of workplace injury and death in Australia;
  2. identify contemporary OHS data sources and explain their merits and limitations;
  3. describe and evaluate various injury models;
  4. analyse the legal framework for OHS and occupational injury management, including the roles of:

a. Robens type legislation and other historical drivers;

b. contemporary developments - Harmonised OHS legislation;

c. OHS worker representation and other stakeholders;

d. worker's compensation;

e. other related legislation and regulation;

  1. describe and discuss the application of occupational rehabilitation programs and service management;
  2. analyse and contextualise the OHS impacts of contemporary work patterns; and
  3. identify contemporary OHS achievements and emerging challenges and contextualise their impact within OHSMS.
