Synopsis
How to recognise, evaluate and control hazards in workplaces arising from substances, sound, radiation and micro-organisms. Principles and practice of occupational hygiene including the use of simple instruments, ventilation, personal protective equipment and workplace substances laws. Hygienic standards and their various forms and notations. The difficulties of assessing prior exposures for medico-legal and epidemiological purposes
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- identify and analyse significant patterns of hazards and risks to health from work in Australia;
- communicate fluently using appropriate terminology to describe chemical, physical and microbiological hazards;
- identify common hazards and apply appropriate techniques for exposure measurement;
- using evidence based information, effectively communicate strategies for the identification of occupational hazards and risks and the development of appropriate controls;
- implement and evaluate common interventions used to control simple workplace risks; and
- identify when further expertise is required to measures and/or control workplace hazards.

Hurdle: Full attendance at unit block days.
Workload requirements
