Synopsis

This unit will explore the social, political, legal, ethical and practice context of care for mentally disordered offenders. Clinical issues in forensic psychiatry and the needs of forensic mental health patients will be discussed. The knowledge and skills required by practitioners to assess and care for mentally disordered offenders will be developed.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Identify the factors (including historic, social, legal, medical, ethical) that shape forensic mental health care;
Identify the specialist issues (including knowledge, skills, policy, practice, contextual) in forensic psychiatry;
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required by forensic mental health practitioners in the assessment and care of mentally disordered offenders.

Assignment (1,500 words) (15%)
Essay (3,500 - 4,000 words) (60%)

All assessments must be passed to pass the unit.
