Synopsis

This unit explores how globalisation has and continues to reconfigure international and local contexts, as well as students' own individual lives, where practices and policies of adult learning are being debated and redesigned. Students are introduced to competing interpretations of globalisation and development, considering the meaning that these concepts have in relation to market-driven economies, diversity and equity issues, and civil society and social movements.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

engage critically with conceptual perspectives on the relationship between adult education and development
examine the global and local development context of adult education in a 'middle-income country'
provide opportunities to explore and develop understanding of transformative adult education in civil society contexts, in order to stimulate dialogue around the meaning of the concept 'global/local learning' and encourage critical discussion on the relationships between learning, politics and organisation in the context of civil society organisations and social movements.
