Synopsis

This unit explores health and physical education (HPE) teaching and learning in the primary and secondary years. The unit introduces students to increase knowledge and experience in the unique teaching and learning environment of HPE. It provides the historical, philosophical and pedagogical foundations of HPE, enabling students to develop confidence and competence in teaching HPE to students in the primary and secondary years.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. articulate the unique contribution of HPE to the general curriculum
  2. demonstrate knowledge of the philosophy, history and contemporary status of school physical education
  3. develop, design and plan lessons, units and curricula that are developmentally appropriate for the primary and secondary years
  4. understand, utilise and have participated experientially in a variety of physical education specific pedagogies, e.g. fundamental motor skills, sport education, thematics and game-centred approaches, that promote moving-related educative experiences
  5. express concepts and information about health and health-related matters as it pertains to health education, e.g. drug education, sexuality education.

Assignment 1 (2400 words, 60%)
Examination (2 hours) (1600 words, 40%)

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • 1-hour lecture per week
  • 1-hour tutorial or practical per week

(b.) Additional requirements:

  • 10 hours of independent study per week including reading, completing assessment tasks and reviewing and/or completing online tasks
