Synopsis

This unit is designed to introduce students to the different forms of knowledge and genres when studying at university. It provides students with a range of specific and identifiable strategies that prepare students for the pace and depth of successful undergraduate study. Students are introduced to the traditions inherent within university learning and the changing culture of this type of scholarship. Particular emphasis is given to the importance of independent learning and critical thought in university studies.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will:

  1. understand how transition to university will affect their first year studies;
  2. understand the key terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules, theories and practice in Higher Education Studies;
  3. Be able to employ relevant theoretical and practical knowledge in a range of skills central to university learning, including critical thinking, reading and writing;
  4. have an appreciation of the skills necessary to maximise their learning from lectures, tutorials and teaching materials;
  5. an ability to produce essays and reports that present arguments and adhere to the standard conventions of academic presentation; and
  6. Understand how learning at a university will change the nature of their engagement with the world.

Within semester assessment: 65%
Exam: 35%

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
