Synopsis

This unit focuses on city-regions on the Indian and Pacific Ocean Rims of Australia. This large region surrounding Australia encompasses nearly 2/3rds of the world's current population and is the main driving force for the economic and social dynamism of cities and national and global economies in the 21st Century. The unit will develop the ability of students to link theoretical and policy frameworks of regional economic development, industrial location, rural-urban linkages, urban governance and environmental management with planning initiatives and strategies to promote sustainable development of city-regions in the Indian-Pacific Ocean rims.

Outcomes

Students successfully completing this unit will:

Show a sound understanding of theoretical concepts and frameworks of state-led economic development, urbanisation, industrial growth, and regional development;
Develop a comparative analytical perspective for examining the spatial structure of urban and regional economic development of city regions over time;
Gain bibliographic, mapping, and data collection skills for developing a deeper understanding of urban planning and development issues occurring in one city-region in the Indo-Pacific rims;
Develop the ability to work in groups to analyse and present a project or proposal for urban or regional development pertaining to a selected city-region;
Be able to effectively present (in written, graphics, and oral forms) clear, concise, and rigorously researched analysis of urbanisation and sustainable regional development issues.

Exam: 40%

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
