This unit provides students with an opportunity to focus specifically on contemporary Australian art and understand Australia's place within the international art world. As well as looking at iconic, controversial and innovative examples of Australian art practice from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, students will analyse the contexts for Australian art at local, national and global levels. Australian art will be examined in the contexts of the centre-periphery debates, Australia's role in international art events, the rise of new museological practice, artist run spaces and guerrilla art events. This unit is therefore ideal for those interested in Australian art and visual culture either as an observer or practitioner.

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. identify and reflect on diverse forms of contemporary Australian art.
  2. explore and reflect on a variety of local, national and global contexts for Australian art.
  3. reflect on and develop an appreciation for the links between the practice, theory and reception of contemporary Australian art.
  4. recognise and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of different contemporary Australian art practices in a range of viewing contexts.
  5. express verbally and in writing critical views on contemporary Australian art.
