Requirements

Units are 12 credit points unless otherwise stated.

In order to graduate from D6004 Master of Leadership with a specialisation students must complete units in a specialisation as listed below, or any two specialist units to complete the generalist award.

Specialisations

Community learning

This specialisation equips aspiring leaders to develop, coordinate and lead the learning of people and their communities. Participants learn about leadership to form economically, socially and ecologically sustainable communities and to develop learning that encourages participation and engagement. This includes fostering opportunities for young people to contribute to economic, social and ecological outcomes in communities.

Students complete:

• EDF5662 Leading local, rural and regional learning and participation
• EDF5664 Learning through participation

Curriculum and pedagogy

This specialisation develops specialist skills in curriculum leadership and professional learning leadership in the areas of digital learning, literacy, mathematics or science. It extends key understandings of best practice to participants who work within policy trends to lead change across organisations.

Students complete two units from one of the four following areas, or from across these areas:

(a.) Digital learning

• EDF5647 Technology and education key issues and debates
• EDF5672 Leadership in educational technology practices

(b.) Literacy

• EDF5649 Language and literacies across educational contexts
• EDF5650 Literacy leadership in schools, workplaces and communities

(c.) Mathematics

• EDF5651 Developing expertise in mathematics education
• EDF5673 Leading mathematics and numeracy educators

(d.) Science

• EDF5652 Understanding research and leadership in science education
• EDF5674 Engaging with practices of contemporary science

Language education

(Not available in 2015)

This specialisation builds teachers' capacities to teach languages and lead language learning in schools. It focuses on principles and practices in languages education in the twenty-first century. Teachers taking this specialism will be eligible to apply to the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) (http://www.vit.vic.edu.au) for endorsement as a specialist language teacher.

Students complete units from one of the following areas:

(e.) LOTE:

• EDF5675 Directions in teaching languages: Foundation to Year 10
• EDF5676 Global and local innovations in language teaching and learning
• EDF5699 Extended teaching practice (0 points)*

(f.) TESOL:

• EDF5640 Language, culture and curriculum
• EDF5641 Pedagogy and assessment in TESOL
• EDF5699 Extended teaching practice (0 points)*

* EDF5699 is only for students registered to teach in Australia who are seeking endorsement as specialist language or EAL teachers.

Organisational learning

This specialisation develops leaders to create and foster conditions and capabilities that enable organisational learning and creativity, and to facilitate strategies for developing organisational knowledge and intelligence into a sustainable capability for innovation.

• EDF5636 Leading organisational decision making

Principal preparation

This specialisation is designed as a pathway to high-performing principalship and/or curriculum leadership in schools. It extends personal and professional understanding, growth and skills in school leadership practice. The specialisation focuses on an appreciation of how to develop collaborative partnerships within school, local, regional and professional communities, and is suited to teachers from all sectors who aspire to curriculum or principal leadership roles in schools.

• EDF5636 Leading organisational decision making
