Synopsis

The formulation of a non-pharmaceutical product in case studies provided by local Industry forms the basis of this unit, which focusses on the theory and use of surfactants. Students will also visit industry sites to gain an appreciation of the range of possible employment domains.

Cases will be drawn from

  • agrochemicals
  • personal care products
  • detergents
  • paints
  • cosmetics

Outcomes

After completing this unit students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Define a relevant research strategy for information needed to solve an authentic industry problem based on the theory and use of surfactants;
  2. Create an appropriate protocol for the scientific investigation needed to solve the given problem;
  3. Design and conduct the experiments according to industry standards, including thecollection, analysis and interpretation of the results;
  4. Report on, and critically discuss, experimental findings, and draw appropriate conclusions, in written and oral formats;
  5. Work effectively in teams, demonstrate effective time management and task prioritisation; and
  6. Reflect on the similarities and differences between pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical formulations.

In semester assessment 60%, final assessment 40%
