Synopsis

The psycho-social effects of work on individuals is explained from a preventive viewpoint. Mental illness and its effect on employment is considered. Also disability discrimination and equal employment opportunity legislation, employee assistance programs and workplace health promotion.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

identify and evaluate varied situations where workers find it hard to cope;
identify and analyse the causes of absenteeism and develop and implement appropriate management control strategies;
communicate the underpinning principles of disability discrimination and equal employment legislation and practically apply them in workplace settings;
develop, implement, and evaluate a health promotion program;
implement evidence-based occupational drug and alcohol management;
analyse the health effects of shift work and implement appropriate rosters and other strategies to minimise hazardous factors;
reflect critically on theoretical models and concepts underpinning organisational psychology; and
develop insightful and persuasive recommendations to improve workplace culture.
