Synopsis

This unit will help clarify what evidence based practice (EBP) is, especially in the general practice setting. The unit aims to enhance student skills in finding and applying the latest research evidence. This includes searching evidence databases on the internet, and critically appraising the information retrieved. The course has been written on the assumption that participants have not previously studied research methods or clinical epidemiology, although either of these would be helpful.

Outcomes

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the role and limitations of research evidence in clinical practice
  2. Formulate a well structured l question that arises from clinical practice
  3. Search for evidence based answers to questions, especially via electronic resources
  4. Appraise the relevance and validity of the evidence that was found by the search
  5. Apply the evidence to individual patients taking into account their values and the available resources
  6. Apply evidence based practice skills to improve the quality of clinical practice.
