Synopsis

A systematic approach to solving a wide variety of engineering problems involving the use of mass and energy balances. Simple models for the sizing of equipment involved in chemical reaction, heat transfer and fluid flow operations. Application of these principles to selected engineering processes such as power generation, beer brewing and refrigeration.

Outcomes

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. understand and describe the various terms in the General Balance Equation when applied to total mass, component mass and total energy
  2. demonstrate the importance of the dimensional homogeneity of equations
  3. apply mass and energy balances, and heat transfer concepts to engineering processes relevant to process industry which include steady flow processes with and without reaction
  4. solve complex problems using the computer simulation package - HYSYS
  5. solve practical problems by applying knowledge, tools, and techniques including written communication skill, project planning and execution, as well as team work, developed in the unit;
  6. apply the following procedures to ensure the accuracy of solution: check dimensional consistency of any expression used; check the order of magnitude of any calculated result; check the validity of major assumptions once calculations are completed.

Assessment

Individual test and group project works: 50%
Examination (2 hours): 50%
Students are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component (assignments, tests, mid-semester exams, laboratory reports) and at least 45% in the final examination component and an overall mark of 50% to achieve a pass grade in the unit. Students failing to achieve this requirement will be given a maximum of 45% in the unit.

2 hours lectures, 4 hours problem solving sessions and 6 hours of private study per week

Prerequisites

VCE Mathematical methods 3/4 (or equivalent) recommended.
