Synopsis

Our personality makes us who we are. It affects how we interact with people, how we behave, and the things we like and dislike. Despite its involvement in everything we do, there is no single universally accepted explanation of how and when personality develops, or how changeable it is. This unit explores a range of approaches to understanding personality and allows new insight into the student's own personality and that of others.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

Appreciate the variety that exists within and between the dominant explanations for the origin and function of personality;
Compare and critically evaluate personality theories;
Engage in self-exploration and reflect on their own personality and attitudes;
Understand and the complex interplay between biology and environment in personality development and function;
Apply personality theories in order to explain and predict an individual's behaviour.
