Synopsis

This unit develops basic language skills (speaking/listening and reading/writing) beyond the level acquired in Catalan introductory 1 and provides an introduction to modern Catalan society. It is designed for those with limited knowledge of Catalan. Students will be encouraged to develop appropriate language learning strategies. Regular assessed homework and tests emphasize the continuous nature of language learning and the need for frequent practice. In the specialized culture component, students will explore aspects of Catalan culture and society and develop the skills to be able to analyse Catalan culture and society.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

use the basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills needed to communicate in a range of situations referring to past, present and future: talking about, writing about and understanding others talking about self, family, studies, accommodation, travel and leisure activities.
communicate effectively in Catalan, with a minimum of misunderstandings, in a range of situations, such as sharing accommodation, carrying out everyday tasks such as shopping, eating out, travelling, attending university, etc.
skim read or read in detail straightforward, short texts in Catalan e.g. advertisements, cartoons, brochures, informal correspondence, short newspaper articles or extracts from longer texts.
demonstrate knowledge of the sounds and the key structures of the Catalan language, e.g. past, present and future tenses, pronouns, articles, adjectives, adverbs.
demonstrate knowledge of a range of vocabulary appropriate to the situations described above
develop an awareness of different language learning strategies and adopt learning strategies most appropriate to their preferred learning style
acquire a greater critical knowledge and understanding of modern Catalan society
develop a critical understanding of issues of identity in the Catalan-speaking areas since the beginning of the 20th century
develop an explicit understanding and more sophisticated practice of text analysis, especially in relation to film
develop research skills

Oral test: 10%
