Synopsis

Issues and events post 1900 using global and regional frameworks. Critical analysis will be used to gain an understanding of the most significant forces that have shaped the period 1900 to present. Topics studied include sovereign states; imperialism; World War I, the Depression, Nazis, World War II, Nuclear Age, Cold War, Collapse of the Soviet Empire, and Nationalism in the 1990s.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply theoretical and methodological tools in the evaluation of geographic, environmental, social, economic, and political factors which have shaped, and continue to shape the world since 1900;
demonstrate conceptual and analytical skills in examining the causes and consequences of major global and regional trends;
use oral and written presentation skills in discussions of contemporary global and regional issues;
demonstrate an interest in and understanding of world events and t foster a life long study of the forces which shape regions and the global system.
