Structure and organisation - Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is a diverse and complex research and teaching organisation operating at campuses in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa and in collaboration with other partners around the world.

With a prominent profile in the top tier of universities for excellence in the life sciences, Monash is also the only Australian member of the prestigious M8 Alliance of academic health centres, medical universities and national academies. The reputation of the faculty is reflected through being honoured with the 2011 co-presidency for the World Health Summit, the eminent global gathering for health care professionals held annually in Berlin. In terms of global rankings, both the Times Higher Education and QS tables place Monash well in the top 50 universities worldwide for health care.

With more than 10,500 students and 3,500 staff including adjunct appointments, the faculty is the largest of its kind in Australia. This is without detriment to academic performance; Monash is consistently ranked in the highest echelon for teaching and learning quality across the life science disciplines and has received the highest aggregate recognition for academic excellence.

The faculty comprises ten teaching and clinical schools, and three research institutes. The Monash Institute of Medical Research (MIMR), Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) and the Monash Obesity and Diabetes Institute (MODI) are integral parts of the faculty’s significant research commitment. The faculty is affiliated and co-located with leading research institutes including the Baker IDI Medical Research Institute and the Burnet Institute (located at AMREP: the Alfred Medical and Research Education Precinct), the Prince Henry's Institute for Medical Research and the research elements of Monash Health (within MHTP: the Monash Health Translation Precinct at Monash Medical Centre), and the Mental Health Research Institute.

Clinical excellence and research translation are fundamental to the faculty’s vision, values and outcomes. Our major teaching hospitals include Monash Medical Centre (the largest facility of Australia's largest healthcare provider network, Monash Health), The Alfred (Melbourne's major casualty hospital) and the Eastern Health network. In total, the faculty operates in 125 practices and 68 hospitals.

Health care in rural and regional areas is a key area of focus for the faculty with medical programs taught at Churchill and with regional clinical centres centred upon Bendigo and across the greater Gippsland region.
