Description

The Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Finance and Investment) degree is designed to provide breadth of knowledge in core business areas such as accounting, economics, marketing, management and business law, as well as depth of knowledge in specific areas related to finance and investments. This will enable students to actively pursue careers in a range of finance-related fields, including investment management, financial services and financial planning. Students gain valuable practical experience through taking a compulsory work placement program or business case study unit.

The degree is delivered adopting a blended learning approach when students can choose to study on-campus at Gippsland, study online by distance learning, or select a combination of the two learning approaches.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that graduates will:

(a) be critical and creative scholars who:

Structure

The course has three main components:

  • a set of core units which provide an introduction to the key areas of business study
  • a ten-unit specialisation
  • eight electives which may be taken from any Faculty of Business and Economics programs and campuses, or from disciplines offered by another faculty.

Requirements

Students must complete 24 units over a maximum of eight years as follows.

(a) 16 units (96 points) from the faculty in the Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Finance and Investment) as follows:

(i) six compulsory core units (36 points)

(ii) a major of ten units (60 points)

  • ACG2851 Accounting information systems and financial modelling
  • BEG3600 Industry experience project
  • BFG1300 Money and capital markets
  • BFG2210 Personal finance and decision making
  • BFG2631 Financial management
  • BFG3121 Investments and portfolio management
  • BFG3210 Financial planning
  • BFG3300 Fundamentals of financial derivatives
  • BFG3631 Advanced financial management

plus one unit (6 points) from the following:

  • ECG2721 Trade finance and foreign exchange
  • ECG3143 Economics of money and banking

(b) eight open electives (48 points):

  • may be taken from disciplines offered by another faculty
  • may be taken from any Faculty of Business and Economics programs and campuses**

The level of the unit is indicated by the first number in the unit code; undergraduate units are those that commence with the numbers 1-3.

**Note: Enrolment in units at another campus is subject to there being capacity after students from that campus have enrolled.

Additional degree requirements:

  • a maximum of 10 first-year level units (60 points)
  • a minimum of six third-year level units (36 points), of which at least four units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty.
  • in addition to specific unit prerequisites, second-year level units require the successful completion of three first-year level units and third-year level units require the successful completion of two second-year level units.
