Synopsis

This unit has two components and focuses on the development of direct assessment, planning and intervention skills utilizing through

1. classroom teaching and
2. direct supervised clinical placement.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate beginning competence in interviewing, assessment, planning and intervention skills with particular reference to child welfare and aged care settings.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of selected theoretical approaches and the ways in which these theories can be integrated in practice.
3. Evaluate the ways in which theory and practice can be integrated.
4. Understand the multi-dimensional nature of social welfare assessment and intervention with particular reference to child welfare and aged care settings.
5. Critically evaluate some of the strengths and limitations of working within human service organizations.
6. Critically evaluate the impact of 'self' in the social welfare context.

Assessment

Students are required to successfully complete both components of the unit in order to pass the unit. The unit is marked as pass grade only (PGO). Students will complete a clinical placement and submit assessment reports and also a number of in-class role play assessments. The fieldwork component is worth 50% of the unit mark and the skills component is worth 50% of the unit mark with each assignment is the skills component worth 25% of the unit mark.

Contact hours

Students will attend up to two hours of direct teaching classes per week and are expected to complete one hour of independent study each week. Students are also required to attend a clinical placement agency for a minimum of three days per week for a total of 320 hours during which time they will not be required to attend any on-campus lectures or tutorials.

SWK2100 and SWK2120
Students will also be required to satisfactorily undertake National Police Checks and Working with Children checks (where the WWC is required by the organization).
