Synopsis

Students will explore two main areas of welfare provision namely child welfare and aged care. This unit will form one specific basis to guide the students in their choice of specialization for the remainder of their studies.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Outline a model of service delivery that encompasses the primary, secondary and tertiary elements of social welfare provision;
  2. Identify and critically analyze the ways in which children and older people have been constructed over time and in the contemporary context;
  3. Construct child welfare and aged care as issues concerned with public health and the promotion of social justice;
  4. Critically analyze child welfare and aged care in terms of development across the lifespan; and
  5. Explain broad policy responses, themes, characteristics and limitations in response to child welfare and aged care.

Assessment

One essay of 2,000 words worth 40% of the unit mark and one essay of 2,500 words worth 60% of the unit mark.

Contact hours

Students will attend up to three hours of direct teaching classes per week and are expected to complete nine hours of independent study each week.

Co-requisites

This unit is a co-requisite for students in the Bachelor of Health Promotion wishing to undertake either SWK3380 or SWK3390 at level 3
