Synopsis

Direct practice skills are an essential component of social welfare practice. This unit offers the opportunity to develop preparatory skills central to the formation of a helping relationship. There will be particular emphasis on working with individuals coming into contact with the child welfare and aged care contexts.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify the basic elements of the helping relationship and demonstrate skills in these particularly for working with children, young people and older people;
  2. Discuss a range of ethical issues relating to direct practice particularly for individuals coming into contact with the child welfare and aged care fields of practice;
  3. Identify the role of values in direct practice with individuals, with particular emphasis on the child welfare and aged care fields;
  4. Demonstrate beginning skills appropriate for direct practice with individuals, with particular emphasis on the child welfare and aged care fields; and
  5. Articulate an understanding of the implications of the social context for direct practice with individuals, with particular emphasis on the child welfare and aged care fields.

Assessment

Classroom participation and role plays 20%
Assignment reviewing student skills development 30% worth of the unit mark.
Analysis of a case study worth 50% of the unit mark.

Students will attend up to three hours of direct teaching classes per week and are expected to complete nine hours of independent study each week.
