Synopsis

This unit provides the opportunity for the student to develop fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the restoration and maintenance of optimal mental health. Students will be expected to assess people with mental health problems and to identify, prioritise and implement appropriate evidence based interventions and management strategies.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to:

  1. discuss concepts of mental health and mental illness;
  2. describe services available for consumers with mental illness;3. identify the impact of stigma on consumers and their carers;
  3. identify and respond to consumer specific issues such as culture, age and gender to optimise therapeutic communication and demonstrate cultural competency and safety in mental health nursing practice;
  4. describe and discuss Mental Status Examination (MSE) and risk assessments conducted with clients who are experiencing disturbances in thought, mood, behaviour and perception
  5. discuss the utilisation of legal and ethical issued related to the care of clients when admitted under the amended Victorian Mental Health Act (1986);
  6. describe th aetiological factors, epidimiology and clinical manifestations of a range of disorders including affective disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosis, depression and child and adolescent issues; and
  7. describe a range of therapeutic modalities utilised in the care and treatment of people with mental health issues and disorders.
