The unit will cover the epidemiology and burden of disease of existing and emerging communicable diseases of public health importance in developing countries. The unit emphasises a comprehensive evidence based approach to communicable disease control, which includes elements of health promotion, disease prevention and case management, which may be delivered through both government and non-government sectors. Guest speakers will provide real examples of practical and effective control interventions, based on their own experience in developing countries.
On completion of the unit, students should be able to:
Have a better knowledge of the evidence based measures to control these communicable diseases and gain a better appreciation of some of the practical issues in implementing effective disease control measures in resource poor settings
