Synopsis

The psycho-social effects of work on individuals is explained from a preventive viewpoint. Mental illness and its effect on employment is considered. Also disability discrimination and equal employment opportunity legislation, employee assistance programs and workplace health promotion.

Outcomes

demonstrate knowledge of the concepts of stress and how it can be managed;
discuss the causes and management of absenteeism;
demonstrate knowledge of disability and equal employment legislation;
develop, implement, and evaluate a health promotion program;
describe the principles of managing a drug and alcohol program;
discuss the health effects of shift work and the design of rosters to minimise adverse effects; and
describe the concepts underlying organisational psychology.
