Synopsis

Introduction to engineering, the role of engineers and the engineering decision-making process. The Unit covers the economic, environmental, social and ethical aspects of engineering. Particular aspects relate to the systems approach to engineering problems; sustainable development and the environment; lifecycle concepts, safety, management, quality, economic analysis; engineering ethics, report writing, oral presentations, drawing and teamwork.

Outcomes

It is anticipated that students who successfully complete ENG1061 are expected to:

  1. be able to undertake a multi-disciplinary project in order to appreciate the scope of engineering including emphasis on its breadth, interactions and linkages with other disciplines
  2. be able to undertake work in a professional manner taking into consideration the role of engineers in society including safety, quality and environmental issues and deal with ethical issues faced by engineers
  3. be able to work in multicultural groups, practice group roles, apply conflict resolution and apprecaite the teamwork/multidisciplinary nature of engineering
  4. be able to utilise a systems approach to conceptual design and develop systems thinking skills
  5. employ and practice communication skills, build an appreciation of the need for and value of both verbal and written communications in engineering. Included in this are the concepts of quality and standard in all communications
  6. develop knowledge of one or two engineering skills, eg; economic, environmental, social and ethical aspects of engineering including demonstration of the ability to operate computer based engineering design packages
  7. continue to be motivated to study engineering, work towards an engineering career and undertake lifelong learning

Assessment

Group Projects: 40%
Individual assignments/tests: 13%
Presentations: 12%
Closed book exam (2 hours): 35%.
Students are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component (assignments, tests, mid-semester exams, laboratory reports) and at least 45% in the final examination component and an overall mark of 50% to achieve a pass grade in the unit. Students failing to achieve this requirement will be given a maximum of 45% in the unit.

VCE Mathematical methods 3/4 (or equivalent) recommended.
