Synopsis

This unit continues to develop the role of the paramedic as a clinician. It will build on a model of paramedic clinical reasoning and decision-making developed in prerequisite units and will provide the context to support the implementation of knowledge and skills necessary for effective patient care. Simulation will be used to develop competencies needed to manage common health emergencies in the community. The unit also includes a supervised clinical practicum with an emergency medical service.

Outcomes

By the completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

1. Evaluate their clinical approach to the assessment and care of patients in the community and their ability to communicate effectively with patients across the lifespan;
2. Provide appropriate care for patients at an advanced skill level within a simulation setting and while under supervision in a clinical setting;
3. Demonstrate appropriate professional and teamwork behaviours in the health settings associated with this unit;
4. Work as an effective team member with paramedics and health care professionals to provide appropriate patient care;
5. Demonstrate a culturally sensitive approach to their own reactions and those of patients and their families or carers to acute illness or injury.
6. Reflect on their performance in the clinical setting to identify the adequacy of their judgements and the internal and external factors influencing clinical decision making.

Reflective journal (3000 words): Pass/Fail
Workplace professionalism evaluation: Pass/Fail
Each assessment task is a hurdle (must pass to complete the unit)
The passing grade for this unit will be PGO only.
