Synopsis

This unit continues to develop the role of the paramedic as a clinician by developing knowledge and skills needed to care for birthing women and neonates in the community. The unit will be case based, and will include clinical skills laboratories and simulation to develop essential clinical skills, clinical problem solving and decision making competencies.

Outcomes

Describe models of care associated with maternal services available to the community.
Identify and interpret the evidence supporting the paramedic care of pregnant and childbearing women and their babies.
Describe the clinical manifestations of selected health conditions in pregnant and birthing women that may be encountered by paramedics.
Describe the epidemiology, presentation and management of selected conditions experienced by women who are pregnant or experiencing childbirth.
Demonstrate the paramedic assessment and management of maternal and neonatal health care needs.
Demonstrate appropriate paramedic care of the birthing woman in the community.
Demonstrate appropriate paramedic care of the newborn in the community.
Investigate the care needs of the unplanned birth of a neonate in the community.
Investigate cultural considerations paramedics should observe when caring for pregnant women.
