TRN4200 - Theory and practice of interpreting

Synopsis
This unit consists of two components:
- An introduction to the theory, principles and techniques of interpreting and an overview of ethical and professional issues;
- The practice of consecutive interpreting: dialogue interpreting and speech interpreting.
Topics to be covered include an overview of the history, of the essential theoretical concepts and of the ethical principles of interpreting; aspects of speaking, listening and non-verbal communication fundamental to consecutive interpreting.
Objectives
This unit aims at developing key interpreting techniques expected of a professional interpreter. It also enables students to acquire background knowledge for the various socio-cultural contexts for interpreting in Australia.
Upon completion of the unit, students should have gained:
- the basic techniques of interpreting in a dialogue mode and of providing consecutive interpreting of speeches,
- all the skills of analytic reading and listening, memorization, note-taking, and they should be able to apply them to the different modes of interpreting,
- an understanding of ethics of the profession and of their appreciation in various interpreting situations,
- a socio-cultural knowledge for the various domains of interpreting in Australia,
- an appreciation of the history of the interpreting profession, in Australia and worldwide.

Final exams in consecutive interpreting(speech and dialogue interpreting):40%

Contact hours
Students have 6 contact hours per week, consisting of either two 2-hour seminars and one 2-hour workshop or one 2-hour seminar and two 2-hour workshops.
Co-requisites
The parallel core unit, TRN4040 can be taken concurrently or, for part-time students, in the preceding year.
