SynopsisThis is a core third level unit which provides an introduction to the basic physical and mechanical properties of common materials (metals, composites and ceramics). It presents students with the basic knowledge on functional materials and devices. Material selection, materials performance and failure mechanisms will be discussed in application to selected modern devices in mechatronics and aerospace engineering. In addition, some discussion will focus on device fabrication. ObjectivesStudents are expected to gain an understanding of materials classification and their atomic and molecular structure. They should be able to describe the features of a material which control a given property and appreciate the material properties and their relation to structure as a function of forming methods and heat treatment processes. Students will be expected to formulate design criteria based on material properties and to demonstrate an appreciation of material compatibility requirements in the fabrication of devices from different classes of materials. Assessment
