SCY3815 - Structure and analysis in sociology

Synopsis
The unit addresses the following issues:
- a developmental and comparative analysis of sociological theory, from its origins in eighteenth-century philosophy, through the classical works of the 'founding fathers', to contemporary social theory - with a focus on structural perspectives;
- the issue of fragmentation and synthesis within social theory;
- the relationship between sociological theories and research strategies. Students will also gain practical experience in putting together a research proposal.
Objectives
Students will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the development of sociological thought;
- Show an appreciation of how particular traditions and theories are historically and culturally grounded;
- Have acquired an understanding of sociology as a social science and the interdependence between theory and method; and
- Have mastered basic skills in proposal writing.
Assessment
Assignment 1 (1000 words) : 25%
Research proposal (1500 words) : 35%
Exam (2 Hours) : 40%
Contact hours
2.5 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1.5 hours tutorial) per week
