SynopsisThis unit examines contemporary understandings of, and relations with children. It also considers how these understandings and relations have changed over time. That is, shifts in public responses to children and variations in how children are treated are explored in relation to changing economic arrangements and prevailing family structures. Literature which examines the connection between power, the state and minority status, as well as theories dealing with the construction of social categories will be used as frameworks for analysing the changing status and notions of children and childhood.
