SynopsisFunctions, domain and range, function representation; different types of functions including linear, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, polynomial and rational functions; function algebra; composition of functions; inverse of functions; transformations; modelling with functions; rates of change; introduction to differentiation and integration, including techniques and applications. ObjectivesOn completion of this unit students will have acquired knowledge of: the notions of function and their representation as tables, graphs or mathematical expressions; basic characteristics of linear, exponential, trigonometric, and polynomial functions; algebra of functions and inverse functions; the notions of rate of exchange, differentiation and integration; will have developed skills in: identifying linear, exponential, logarithmic, periodic, polynomial, and rational patterns in graphs, tables, and mathematical expressions; using function algebra, calculating composition of functions and inverse functions; transforming functions through shifting, scaling and reflection; using functions as models of real- life behaviour; calculating simple derivatives and integrals; using computer algebra software to investigate the behaviour of functions, and their transformations and combinations, and as an aid in the modelling of real-life problems; and will have developed and/or strengthened the ability to present mathematical arguments in writing.
