Synopsis

This unit will involve a comprehensive examination of executive leadership in Australia and internationally. Students will study individual, group and organisational issues, specifically in terms of current and traditional leadership models and paradigms; gender, ethical, and strategic issues; and the relationships between leadership and performance, group dynamics, and organisational culture.

Objectives

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

  • define the purposes and scope of leadership theories and research outcomes, and identify their applications to real-life situations
  • describe and evaluate the principles and practices of management, their differences and similarities to leadership, and their relationship to leadership in an organisational setting
  • evaluate the multifaceted nature of leadership in Australia and internationally, and enhance students' own leadership skills in the process
  • evaluate the trends in and implications of leadership and management research in organisations and their impact on work environments
  • critically analyse the development of leadership in relation to research outcomes and practical applications.
