SynopsisThis unit provides students with an opportunity for a critical engagement with contemporary scholarship on the geography of journalism, with particular reference to urban, regional and rural contexts. Journalism will be placed in a larger context of film and literary production about urban and rural society and culture. It will take a comparative historical approach, canvassing the Chicago School and North American approaches to urban studies and journalistic methodologies; Australian and North American rural media; European urban culture, the global city hypothesis, multiculturalism and the new mega-cities; and the impact of rural depopulation.
