SynopsisThis unit explores how genes control the unfolding of the body plan following fertilization, and genetic processes in organogenesis and tissue differentiation. A comparative approach is used, based on model organisms including yeast, Arabidopsis, a nematode, a fly and the mouse. The impact of genome sequence projects is highlighted. Implications for medicine (e.g. birth defects, tissue replacement) and animal and plant production (e.g. genetically modified organisms) will be explored. Experience in modern molecular and cytological techniques is offered. Assessment
