Synopsis

This unit will place information system security at the forefront of IT Security Governance. Students will develop an holistic approach to security within the larger context of the organisation. This approach will be developed by using a Security Governance framework which will adopt Risk management as the strategy of choice. Students will identify the major security impacts on the organisation. Security policies will include links to Sarbanes Oxley Act and Australian security standards such as ISO17799. Security audits provide an iterative process to the framework. Future security issues and trends will contribute to the students overall understanding of security governance.

Objectives

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • understand the importance of information systems security concepts and philosophies to contemporary organisations;
  • identify developments in security control technologies and techniques to manage threats and vulnerabilities to an organisations information assets;
  • have developed attitudes which allow them to adopt a critical approach to the analysis and design of information systems security systems;
  • have developed attitudes which allow them to understand the ethical implementations of security issues;
  • apply risk management techniques to the planning and management of information systems security systems.

Assessment

Examination (2 hours): 40%; In-semester assessment: 60%
