SynopsisThis unit focuses on the relations between regional and national cultures and identities. Through the examination of a range of texts, history, political documents, as well as fiction, poetry and film, this course will examine how the landscape and environment of the north of England, its countryside and cities, its people, their histories, cultures and identities have been represented for differing political or cultural purposes. In particular the course will focus on the representation of childhood, work and unemployment, gender, ethnic and class identity and how each of these feeds into and helps shape, reinforce or contest a sense of regional or cultural identity.
